One Step at a Time

Whatever it is you desire, there is always a strategy, tool or resource to get it.  Whether your desire is business or personal, persistence is one of the most powerful tools you can use to get what you wish for.  When I look at the wins and victories I have enjoyed, persistence always comes up as one of the most effective tools I have used to achieve success. 

What is persistence?  I learned through both success and failure that persistence is to keep moving forward, no matter what, until you reach your goal or achieve your outcome.  Persistence means to not let anything deter you from your quest.  Do not let distractions in the form of other people and their agendas, low priority or unrelated items, other personal or business matters, interrupt, cause doubt or stop you.  You must keep moving forward, even if it is just one small step.  Remember the old proverb, a journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step?  Take one step, then another, then another, this will create momentum.  The importance of momentum is critical.  As long as you have momentum, and persist, there is no stopping you. 

 What does the Power of Persistence give you?  A plan of action, steps to keep moving forward, a goal to work on, a huge victory or reward when you persist to success.  I have always begun a project with 3 things in mind:

  • Knowing my outcome;
  • Having a plan to implement ; and
  • Taking massive and consistent action.

How do I use my persistence?  The key is to decide what you want so the act of persisting to achieve your goal is a normal course of action.  Once you decide what you want, you can create a plan to implement it and begin your consistent action to reach your goal, then you can actually be persistent.  Being persistent, not giving up or letting anything deter you, is a critical component to being successful. 

The Magic of Persistence is everywhere.  Persistence has been a powerful strategy for me, especially in business.  Using persistence, I have:

  • Achieved many of my goals.
  • Kept moving forward toward obtaining a goal or completing a goal, even when I wanted to stop or give up.  My powerful friend, persistence, kept me going. 
  • Solved a problem, dilemma, or challenge.
  • Taken advantage of an opportunity.
  • Kept me strong in a leadership role.
  • Enjoyed the victory!

There are many benefits to being persistent, especially if you know what you want and where you are going. 

One of my biggest victories has been starting an industry trend.  In the 1980’s when personal computers were being introduced, I started a company called Computer Training Services.  I began teaching people how to use computers.  No one else was doing it at that time.  I didn’t let it stop me.  I saw a need and I filled it.  I made a plan, took action and became the first and largest computer training company in the United States.  I taught over 15,000 people how to use a PC.  It was very lucrative. 

Another huge win and personal favorite has been becoming a successful Author’s Coach.  When I started my business, there were lots of people who gave me a polite nod, or a quizzical look when I told them what I did.  I did not let their doubt stop me.  I kept writing, creating, taking steps on my action plan and building my business, one step at a time.  The result? 

  • A fun and profitable business that allows me to create and have the lifestyle I desire.
  • I have helped authors produce more than 250 books since January of 2005.
  • I have helped dozens of people make their book writing dream come true. 
  • I have helped make a difference by getting books out into the world.
  • Most importantly, I enjoy what I do and I am living my passion. 

What is my Power of Persistence strategy?  What is my winning formula?  Here’s what I do to persist:

  • Decide what my goal or desire is in great detail.  I think it, visualize it, write it down, describe it out loud, share it with a couple of people to get feedback and input.  Read your formula for success every day and see it, believe it.
  • Create an Action Plan – a step-by-step action list of what I need to do to make it happen. 
  • Take massive actions.  First SCHEDULE your steps and then TAKE them!  Mark your calendar as to when you are going to complete each step. 
  • Don’t give up – keep doing it!  No matter what, as long as your goal is the same, keep moving forward. 
  • Check your results.  Are your action steps getting you closer to what you want?  If so, keep doing it.  If not:
  • Change your approach.  See what’s working and what needs to be improved.  Make the changes and take another step. 
  • Keep moving forward.  See the win, feel the victory.  Imagine what life is going to be like when you reach your goal. 

How do you get persistence in your life?  Create it for yourself – decide that you will take action to meet your goals.  I have found that I can only be persistent about something I truly care about or really want.  That’s why it is important to decide what it is you want.  Want to be persistent?  Decide to be!

How do you make sure your persistence doesn’t waiver or you don’t lose it?  See the win, every day, and keep it alive.  Take a step toward your victory every day and reward yourself for each landmark you reach on your journey toward your goal.

Many years ago, I learned the lesson and value of persistence when I decided I wanted to get a puppy.  I went to the local animal shelter to get my new pet.  I began walking up and down the rows of cages with dogs of all shapes, colors and sizes barking and jumping all over each other to get my attention.  As I went down row after row looking for my special dog, not only were there hundreds of dogs to choose from, but 20, 30, 40 rows of dog cages to walk through.  I was becoming overwhelmed from the huge lot to choose from and I soon realized I was also very tired from walking on the cold concrete. 

As I reached the end of the 40th row, and had not seen the dog that I knew I should take home, I was tired, thirsty and saddened that I had not found my puppy.  I wanted to go home with my dog that day.  As I reached the end of the last row, disappointed that I had not found my new dog, I saw an employee and asked if there were any more dogs.  She gave me that “haven’t you seen enough” look, and pointed to a little enclosure about 150 feet away.  It looked so far away, but I really wanted my dog so I trudged over to the enclosure to see what was there.  There were 5 cages and it was pretty quiet.  I walked to the first cage and it was empty!  The second cage – empty, third cage, empty. Finally, I reached the fourth cage, empty!  There were no dogs here!  I must have misunderstood the employee’s directions. 

I turned around and began walking back to the lobby when I remembered my promise to myself, I would find my dog today.  I turned around again and walked back to the fifth cage,.  I glanced in and saw nothing.  Then I made myself walk all the way to the end of the cage and there, in the corner, all curled up in a tight little ball, was a little black and white puppy.  There was no jumping, no whining, just two sad little eyes looking up at me.  When I tapped on the cage and said, “Hey, little puppy”, the puppy wagged the tip of its long tale and I instantly knew this dog was mine. 

As it turned out, the puppy was going to be put down that evening and had less than a couple of hours to live.  I had saved her life.  I took her  home with me that day and named her Megan.  She was my Meggie and I had her for 14 wonderful years, she was the best dog I ever had.  My persistence had paid off. 

Persist and your dreams will come true.  Reward yourself for each step you take, and remember to enjoy the journey.

Friday night we celebrated, got a good night’s rest and began learning about creating ancillary products on Saturday.  Today was about marketing and promoting our published books using a variety of strategies, both online and offline.  A fantastic dinner to wrap up the evening.  Yes, it has been quite a weekend, it was wonderful to read the survey forms and letters of thanks. 

I’m driving back to Palm Springs tomorrow after breakfasting with my new authors from Holland, France, Australia, Chicago, Denver, Maryland, Hawaii, Wales, Las Vegas, San Diego, Phoenix, and North Carolina.  I am so proud of them!  I will miss their wonderful hugs, eager faces and warm hearts.

After 8 coaching sessions this summer, I have seen their book ideas and concepts grow into a real structure for their book and evolve into Trigger Sentences™, a storyboard and chapters for their books.  I can’t wait to meet them and give them each a huge congratulatory hug. 

Friday is Day 1 of the event and their “talk” day.  Saturday is all about creating money making ancillary products and Sunday, Let’s Get Famous!  Marketing and Promoting your book. 

I am so excited about this event, I’m doing it again!  I have another 20 authors coming October 30 to talk their books.  The coaching has paid off and now they are totally ready to write their book and create their platform.

  • Problems kids have
  • Solutions for these problems
  • Making a Difference
  • The impact kids have on the world
  • His message to kids

 What a wonderful book!  I am truly honored to be his Author’s Coach and hear his message.  He’ll have a box of books on his porch in about 3 weeks.  I have invited Kevin to be one of my Author’s Mentors at my upcoming Author’s Boot Camps in September and October.

What a great day at the Book Expo of America.  I was like a little kid in a candy store – where do I go first?  Armed with my official BEA Badge to get me past security, BEA Guide, and my empty bag to fill with BEA goodies, I descended into the Mezzanine where all the Children’s Books were showcased.

Row after row of beautiful exhibits filled with gorgeous books, reading toys and accessories.  There was an excited buzz as I walked down the aisles, trying not to ooh and aah over everything.  The booths were colorful, inviting and manned by reps excited to talk about their products.  In spite of the crowds, which got thicker by the minute, I made my way up and down all the aisles of that floor and looked at new books scheduled to hit the book stores this fall.  It was so much fun.  The only downside was most of it was display only, no shoppertunities!

I took a break to meet Stephanie, a new Author client.  We went outside and found a quiet spot to do a live Author’s Coaching Session – my first, at the Javits Center!  I got a hot dog, one of those New York is famous for, and we began strategizing and talking about her book as well as taking steps to write, publish and launch her book.  How cool was that?  To do an Author’s Session at the Book Expo! 

As I went through the main floor, my bag became heavier and more cumbersome with the free books and goodies that had piled up and I looked forward to going through all of them later that evening in my hotel room.  Lucky for many, FedEx has a large and efficient booth to ship your box of books home!

I arrived in the big apple last night excited about attending Author 101 hosted by by Mark Victor Hansen and Rick Frishman today at the Javits Center.  They host  this event each year and always present a great lineup of speakers who naturally expand the vision of your book as well as inspire and motivate the audience to the next level in the business of your book. 

 This weekend is all about the Book Expo of America and I am, of course, excited to meet those in the publishing industry and learn the greatest trends in the book business.  One of the things new authors forget is that writing and publishing a book is just the first step of the business of your book.  Unless you are writing a book simply as a hobby or checking it off on your “to do” list, writing a book is a business, a serious, full-time business.  One of my outcomes for this event is to learn more about what makes a book successful and what steps an author needs to take to achieve this.

  • What is Your Outcome?  What are the results you want with this  book?
  • What is your Purpose?  Why are you writing this book?
  • What is your Vision?  How do you see your book in this world?
  • Who is your audience?  Who is going to read and benefit from your book?

 These are just a few of the important questions to ask yourself and be clear about BEFORE you get started.  Just like any important project, preparation and planning are critical.

It’s that time of the year again!  I am looking forward to going to New York in a few days to attend the Book Expo of America.  Being held at the Javits Center in Manhattan, May 28-31, the BEA is the place to be if you are a writer, author, book seller, book buyer, and especially, a reader.

I am always delighted to see row after row of exhibitors displaying their books and related products.  One of my favorite things to do is fill up my free publisher’s gift bag with books, goodies, flyers, and business cards I receive as I visit the booths and speak to the exhibitors and authors. 

With more than 1,500 exhibitors, BEA is a great way to meet publishers, marketers, vendors, exhibitors, famous authors, learn about new tools, resources and strategies for writing, as well as the new trends for publishing, promoting and marketing a book.  It is, or course, the place to place an order for books for your business.

I will be there this year to visit with several of my published authors, meet new publishers and walk the floor on Saturday with Mark Victor Hansen.  I am very excited to learn more about publishing from his perspective.  Here’s the site to learn more about the Book Expo of America:  www.BookExpoAmerica.com.

Not having any children of my own, I asked my mom and my aunt, who I am spending the day with, and here is what they shared with me:

• When your kids call you mom, mother, mommy, mum, whatever they choose as they all use different words. Whatever it is, you love hearing it. My mom says, “That gave me the most pleasure to hear!”

• Especially when your children come from school and they have a great report card or the teacher paid them a compliment. They bring home their first work of art. You save them for years and years. This joy continues throughout their school years.

• When they get married and the grandchildren come, that is another class of love. It is a miracle to see them born.

• To watch them grow and create their careers. To see the smile on their face as they tell you about their accomplishments as it has a lot to do with what you taught them. To hug them when they need support and advice.

I could write for hours about the experiences they shared with me that made me laugh, brought tears to my eyes and conjured up sweet memorie which were all about the importance of being a mom and what it means to your children. As a daughter, my mom is my very best friend and soul mate.

If you know Armand, his events are always first class. “Armand Live” was not any different in outstanding presentation and hospitality. What made it so incredibly fantastic was that Armand was the only speaker. For three days we learned directly from Armand all the amazing tools, strategies and his internet secrets. I know what I learned will increase my business, both online and off. It was increditable.

If you have a chance to attend an Armand Morin event, take advantage, it will make a huge difference.

It was held last night at the Dallas Marriott South and as the contestants, their friends, family, and parents arrived, you could see who was entered. Some of the contestents came in self-assured and confident in their new clothes and high heels. Others, uncomfortable in brand new taffeta or velvet dresses, were shyly prodded by their folks to the “big room” at the front of the lobby. This room was filled with bright lights, rows of chairs and a large stage, but most frightening of all was the skirted table in front – the table reserved for the judges.

It’s interesting to watch the young girls, in very short skirts, or long dresses and high heels that they have never worn before. You could see how uncomfortable they were and it made me realize how afraid I was – that they would fall.

The one with the most sparkles wins, no it’s the fabulous heels, shiny hair, biggest smile, most assured presence. Who knows what it takes to win, but in my eyes, they were all winners, they showed up competing. They wore their Sunday best, combed their hair, and cowboyed up for a competition. Some knew a few of their competitors, others didn’t, however, all of the contestants learned something on their journey here and on their way home: what they did well and what they need to improve.

It’s the same in business, what lessons have you learned in your earning years? Have you enjoyed the victories? Cheered for others? Did you get dressed in your Sunday best, comb your hair and cowboy up for the competition? I did, and I loved it.

While I waited for my client last evening, I was reminded of all the amazing things my folks taught me, I learned from my teachers, some of my bosses, my dear friends and family, but most of all, my clients in business. They are all lessons to be appreciated and remembered.

Here are a few of my favorites:

• Be honest – give them all the details, up front
• Keep your promises – do what you say you will
• Over deliver – give them your very best, plus more!
• Treat each customer or client like a VIP – they will love you and send others

What happened? I have traveled many times, proudly showing my “United States Government Issued” identification to board an airplane. I definitely showed it to get on the flight to Dallas, but somehow, in the process of sitting down and two and half hours later, getting off, I lost my driver’s license on the way to the hotel.

At first I was a little bummed, but as I unpacked, I quickly realized my Creative Assistant could simply overnight my passport to me on Monday morning. I’m staying for several days to ghostwrite a book so I really don’t need my identification to board an airplane home until the end of the week. I’m safe and still very proud. Next time? Put my driver’s license away in my wallet right away instead of waiting until later.

So, what does this mean? What did that teach me? Two things:

1) This is a perfect example of being clear: what are my resources (who can help me?), thinking fast (how can I resolve this?), and most importantly, remaining calm throughout the resolution of this unplanned event (what most people call an emergency).

2) Another scene in a story, screenplay, treatment, book, etc. I remember the feelings, emotions, thoughts, resolutions, emails and my thought process. This will definitely show up in a future story.

I did, so I signed up for Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G Allen’s event, “Cash in a Flash” that was held this week. It was an excellent three days with two of the most charismatic and marketing savvy gentlemen I have learned from in a long time. Funny, charming, and most of all, intelligent about selling your book, product or service.

The event was conducted in the fabulous Fairmont Hotel in Newport Beach, California, where Mark and Bob shared their knowledge, wisdom and incredible resources with 40 eager participants. Mark and Bob were backed up by a fantastic logistics team and recorded the event on both audio and video for sharing with you! That’s right, you can get a copy of this incredible event.

Most participants paid $5,000 to attend these special three days — Mark’s Inner Circle (which includes me) were invited to attend for FREE! which delighted me and several other Inner Circle members. This meant huge savings and a monster learning experience. Mark and Bob gave everyone (who had been put on teams) a 90 day challenge which at the very least will give my business a monster boost.

Always being an avid reader and great speller, I never imagined the challenges and pain of dyslexia. New author, Robi Jo Banks, completed her first book, “Words from the Mirror: Overcoming the Shame and Isolation of Dyslexia and ADD”. This is her personal story and extraordinary lifetime battle with this disabling “learning difference”. I was in awe of the pain and isolation that people who live in the world of dyslexia suffer. Robi Jo talks about “dyslexing” which is a playful way for compensating for the things you cannot do in a creative and fun way and achieving results that were once challenging.

This amazing story starts in the womb, where dyslexia is also born, as it is a “brain wiring difference”. I learned so much from her incredible story and this book she has written. Robi Jo’s mission is to help others get past the pain, the shame and the private isolation they put themselves in because of this, sometimes, dark secret. The stigma of not being able to read, write or comprehend the written word is enormous, devastating and very painful. Robi Jo is currently seeking stories from women, teens and children about their struggles and triumphs to include in her research and possibly, her book. This is a heartfelt inspirational story. It shares her experience and it also provides solutions for achieving results. When writing an inspirational story like this, what may seem like a huge challenge can be accomplished by answering four simple questions:

1) What happened?
2) How did it effect you?
3) What did you learn?
4) What would you like to share with others?

If you have an inspiring story and want to write your book, think about and answer the questions above and you will be on your way. Just remember, write from your heart!
